Autumn 2012 Hair Trends

NOW that the autumn/winter 2012-13 shows have drawn to a close, it's time to take stock of the season's new hair trends.

1. SLEEK SIDE PARTINGS - Neat and sleek, the side partings at Diane von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham, Christian Dior, Jil Sander and many, many more lent a chic minimalism that let the clothes speak for themselves.

2. FRINGES - Most notable at Versace, Rooney Mara-esque heavy fringes were also seen at Antonio Berardi, Marni and Iceberg.

3. WINDSWEPT - Dishevelled and matte in texture, windswept hair looks were in abundance at Rodarte, Vera Wang, John Galliano and Gianfranco Ferré, whilst at Marc Jacobs and Marios Schwab strands of the models' hair fell loosely in their faces as if blown by a gust of wind.

4. DIP-DYED HAIR - Pastel hair was huge on the spring/summer 2012 catwalks, but for autumn/winter 2012-13 designers opted for the dip dye. A whole host of colour combinations were on show at Prada and Pringle of Scotland, while at Jean Paul Gaultier the look was reversed, with models sporting vibrant spray-painted roots.

5. RETRO - Vintage-looking twisted and pinned styles at Donna Karan and Valentino, Sixties bouffants at DSquared2 and Carolina Herrera and prim flicked bobs at Peter Jensen - retro hairstyles found their way onto catwalks in all four fashion capitals.

6. HAIRBANDS - Pretty, girly and an opportunity to buy more accessories - opulent jewelled hairbands were on show at Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta, whilst wide, knotted versions were spotted at Clements Ribeiro and Moschino Cheap & Chic.

7.  NATURAL - Somewhere between wavy and straight - and with a natural-looking parting - the hair at Balmain, Chloé, Lanvin, Isabel Marant and Burberry had a casual, no-nonsense appeal which means we should all get at least 15 extra minutes in bed each morning during autumn/winter 2012-13.

8. PONYTAILS - They aren't exactly a new trend, we know, but ponytails were all over the catwalks once more for this season - sleek and worn lower than last autumn/winter's dominatrix styles please. Seen at Christian Dior, Chanel, Jonathan Saunders, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Anna Sui.

9.  PLAITS, BRAIDS AND TWISTS - Romantic plaited looks were on show at Emilio Pucci and Mulberry, whilst a more urban take on the trend was seen at Fendi and Mark Fast, where plaits trailed over the models' shoulders. At Marc Jacobs the buns were plaited, whilst at Gucci and Valentino hair was twisted and pinned for a Pre-Raphaelite charm.

10. BALLERINA BUNS - Simple, neat and pretty, buns were seen at Stella McCartney, Diane von Furstenberg and Louis Vuitton, whilst at Marc Jacobs and Rick Owens they were plaited and twisted.
